Key facts

  • BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². Example: 165 lb at 5′9″ (69 in) → 703 × 165 ÷ 69² = 24.4 — normal weight.
  • WHO classes for adults: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, from 25 overweight, from 30 obesity (class I 30–35, II 35–40, III from 40). For 5′9″ the healthy range is about 125–169 lb.
  • BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat: very muscular people can have a high BMI at normal body fat. Children, pregnant people and seniors use their own measures.

FAQ

How do you calculate BMI in pounds and inches?
BMI = 703 × weight in pounds ÷ (height in inches)². Example: 165 lb at 69 in (5′9″) → 703 × 165 ÷ (69 × 69) = 24.4. The factor 703 converts imperial units to the metric BMI.
Which BMI is normal?
Per WHO/CDC, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight for adults. Below is underweight, from 25 overweight, from 30 obesity (class I 30–35, II 35–40, III from 40). The calculator also shows the healthy weight range in pounds for your height.
Is BMI always meaningful?
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat mass and ignores age, sex and fat distribution. For athletes, pregnant people, children and the elderly it is of limited use — when in doubt, consult a doctor.
